Introduction
Someone searches for best running shoes. Another person searches Nike running shoes size 9. A third searches where to buy running shoes near me. All three searches are about running shoes, but the people making them want very different things.
This is the basic idea behind search intent. The words someone types into a search engine provide clues about what they are actually trying to accomplish.
Understanding that purpose is one of the foundations of effective SEO. Businesses that create content around what customers genuinely want are more likely to provide useful answers and attract the right visitors.
What Is Search Intent?
Search intent is the reason behind a search query. It describes what the person searching is trying to find, understand, compare or accomplish.
For example, someone searching how much does SEO cost is probably researching pricing. Someone searching Visibility Studio pricing is looking for a specific website. Someone searching SEO consultant near me may already be looking for a provider.
Understanding these differences helps businesses decide what type of page or content should exist for a particular search.
Research from Ahrefs' search intent guide explains why understanding the purpose behind a query is important when creating search focused content.
The Four Main Types Of Search Intent
Search intent is commonly grouped into four broad categories. Real searches can overlap between categories, but these groups provide a useful framework for planning content.
- Informational intent: The person wants to learn something, answer a question or understand a topic.
- Navigational intent: The person wants to reach a specific website, brand or page.
- Commercial investigation: The person is comparing options before making a decision.
- Transactional intent: The person is ready to take an action such as purchasing, booking or contacting a business.
Informational Searches
Informational searches usually happen when someone is learning or solving a problem.
Examples include what is technical SEO, how does local SEO work and why is my website not ranking.
These searches are often best served by educational guides, explanations, FAQs and practical resources. Our guide to long term search visibility is an example of content designed around an informational need.
Commercial Investigation Searches
Commercial searches happen when someone is evaluating options but may not be ready to make a final decision.
Examples include best SEO consultant, SEO agency vs consultant and local SEO services comparison.
Comparison pages, service explainers, case studies and detailed guides can work well here because the customer needs information that helps them evaluate alternatives.
Transactional Searches
Transactional searches indicate stronger action intent. The customer may be ready to purchase, book, contact or sign up.
Examples include SEO consultant near me, book SEO audit or local SEO pricing.
These searches are usually better matched with service pages, pricing pages, booking pages or other conversion focused destinations rather than general educational content.
Why Search Intent Matters For SEO
A page can be technically well optimised and still fail to perform if it does not satisfy the purpose behind the search.
Imagine someone searching how to improve Google Maps visibility and landing on a page that immediately tries to sell a service without explaining the problem. Even if the page contains the right keywords, it may not provide what the visitor needs.
Google's guidance on helpful, reliable, people first content emphasises creating information that genuinely benefits the intended audience.
Search intent therefore connects SEO with the actual customer experience. It helps businesses create the right information for the right stage of the decision process.
How To Match Content With Intent
The first step is to understand what people expect to see when they search for a particular topic. Look at the wording of the query, the type of information required and the stage of the customer journey.
- Use educational content for questions and informational searches.
- Use comparison content when customers are evaluating different solutions.
- Use service and product pages for searches with strong commercial or transactional intent.
- Use location focused pages when the search clearly includes geographic intent.
- Connect related pages through internal links so customers can move naturally between information and action.
Common Search Intent Mistakes
One of the most common mistakes is forcing every keyword onto a sales page. Not every search represents a customer who is ready to buy.
Another mistake is creating multiple pages that target almost identical intent. This can make the website harder to navigate and create unnecessary competition between its own pages.
Businesses should instead build a clear content structure where each page has a distinct purpose. A well planned Content Strategy can help map topics, intent and page types before content is created.
Conclusion
Search intent is ultimately about understanding the person behind the query.
Businesses that focus only on keywords can miss the reason someone is searching. Businesses that understand intent can create more useful pages, better customer journeys and stronger connections between search visibility and business goals.
The objective is not simply to attract more searches. It is to attract the searches that matter and give people the information or experience they actually came looking for.
